It’s now 5 months after Hurricane Melissa struck our region of Haiti, with torrential winds and days of heavy rain and flooding leaving destruction in its wake.   More than 5,600 families in our catchment area were affected, particularly by the collapse of houses and roofs as well as near complete destruction of crops.  During these months, HHF has been responding working closely with the local community and local leaders by helping remove the debris left behind by the storm as well as continuous pick up of garbage.  Additionally, we provided 11,000 food kits and 10,000 hygiene kits, as well as conducting some repairs to the local hospital.  HHF is currently engaging in discussions with local leaders as well as farmers to begin addressing the food insecurity conditions left behind by Melissa – more sustainable approaches to food security.
