Birth of triplets at the HHF’s Center of Hope

May 5, 2022
Madam Pierre, a 27-year-old pregnant woman, mother of 4 children and living in Moron (a town located about two hours by car from the City of Jérémie) was seen in a mobile prenatal clinic for follow-up of her sixth pregnancy. After evaluation of her pregnancy in the community by the HHF health team, Ms. Pierre was referred to the Center of Hope (COH) for high fundal height and perception of several fetal heart sounds.

Our Center of Hope is a maternal home that welcomes pregnant women with high-risk pregnancies where they receive all the necessary medical care (pregnancy monitoring, laboratory examination, obstetric ultrasound, dispensing of medication) as well as 3 meals a day. At term of pregnancy, pregnant women are transferred to the maternity ward of the departmental hospital for childbirth.

Upon her arrival at the COH, Mrs. Pierre, who was in active labor, was received by the medical staff. Her clinical evaluation concluded that the pregnancy was 7 months, 3 fetuses were observed on ultrasound, and faced with this medical emergency, the COH staff decided to perform the delivery on site. Three newborns arrived from this delivery (2 female and 1 male) weighing 1.3, 1.4 and 1.7 kg respectively. Two newborns in respiratory distress received first aid at the COH, then the 3 newborns accompanied by their mother were transported by our ambulance to the neonatology department of the departmental hospital.

Currently the 3 newborns are hospitalized, their general conditions are stable but fragile because of their prematurity and their low weight. The HHF ensures the permanence in the support of all the medical care necessary for the newborns (purchase of drugs, oxygen support). Mrs. Danoise Pierre is in good health and has already received financial assistance from HHF which will enable her to meet her personal needs. HHF has assessed the family’s situation, including the 4 other sons, and has begun assistance by providing food support.
